Waste Wood Recycling

Social dialogue and quality assurance in the use of recycled wood along the value chain (waste wood dialogue)

The sustainable use of bio-based resources is the subject of various political strategies and programs at national and European level. For example, the bioeconomy policy strategy highlights the particular importance of recycling and waste management in order to "avoid residual and waste materials or to use them for the highest possible quality."

Background and Objective

The project aims to significantly improve the traceability of the use of secondary raw materials through consistent quality assurance and communication along the value creation and process chains. The involvement of all relevant social interest groups and the scientific support mean that a broadly agreed and accepted result and thus a significant increase in the material use of recycled wood can be expected.

Approach

The Waste Wood-Dialogue project is intended to conduct a theoretically and empirically based study for the first time into the attitudes of the actors in the value chain towards high recycling rates in wood-based materials and the reasons for this.In order to answer the respective research questions, a broad range of methods will be used, including qualitative methods, expert interviews and group discussions as well as quantitative methods, i.e. online surveys, multivariate and econometric analysis methods including choice experiments.

Our Research Questions

Does the use of recycled wood in the production of wood-based materials have a positive, negative or no influence on the consumer's purchase decision?

And does the further life cycle of the product, i.e. its disposal and thus its recyclability, play a role in the consumer's decision-making process?
