The study by Wagner et al. 2021 investigates the effect of field acidification with sulphuric acid on ammonia emissions and yield effects of 5 different slurry types in winter wheat. Secondly, the yield and emission response of cattle slurry acidification in interaction with different application systems (band spreading and incorporation) were assessed in spring barley. Acidification reduced NH3 emissions (on average ~50%) in all manure types but with very little effect in pig manure. The reduction effect depended mainly on the amount of acid applied and not on the extent of pH reduction in the slurry. Combination of acidification and incorporation reduced ammonia emissions quantitatively (reduction >90%). Manure acidification and emission-saving slurry application techniques caused an increase in N efficiency without yield benefit.
