We developed a classification scheme for all peat and other organic soils of the German Agricultural Soil Inventory that focuses more on the profile characteristics and differences between mineral and organic layers which are more relevant for emissions than horizon-specific pedogenetic characteristics. Based on that we evaluated the properties of these soil, especially regarding their soil organic carbon (SOC) contents and stocks. We clearly found that not only 'typical' peat soils but also other organic soils, e.g. heavily degraded, covered or deep-ploughed organic soils, store high amounts of carbon. Moreover, we determined pedotransferfunctions for bulk density and SOC density dependent on SOC contents.
