The bioeconomy covers a multitude of activities related to the production of biomass, its diverse application and subsequent reuse.

Since the launch of the first EU Bioeconomy Strategy in 2012, subsequent bioeconomy policies have been defined on regional, national and pan-European levels. Especially the EU Green Deal envisages bioeconomy to play a key role in the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable economy. The evidence-based monitoring of bioeconomy performance is a prerequisite for efficient tailoring of policy support.

The revised EU Bioeconomy Strategy (2018) includes bio-based service in its bioeconomy definition. Thus, Ronzon et al. (2022) take a closer look at the contribution of bio-based services to the economy by answering three research questions: (1) How to define and quantify a bioeconomy service? (2) How does the aggregate of bioeconomy services perform within the economy? (3) What are the sectoral sources of employment and wealth creation within bioeconomy services at the EU and Member State levels?
