In Germany, nearly a quarter of forest land is owned by small private forest owners with less than 20 hectares of forest. These areas are crucial for meeting societal demands on forests, and the responsibility for making decisions regarding actions in these forests and the associated ecosystem services for society falls upon these small private forest owners.
In the InA-PW project, we studied various factors that influence the willingness of small private forest owners to implement eight different forest management activities were analysed. However, existing forest policy instruments like subsidies and forest owner associations reach only a small number of small private forest owners. In particular, specific social groups play a critical role when it comes to measures that are not focused on timber provision.
Based on our findings, improved strategies to create targeted instruments to support small private forest owners can be developed.
