Landscape Forestry in the Tropics: REDD+ und Restoration | LaForeT · R² (New phase from 2020-2023)

Towards policy approaches for improving livelihoods, sustainable forest management and conservation in forests of selected countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America

LaForeT explores the impact of policy instruments as well as additional drivers on deforestation and reforestation in the Tropics. It is funded by the Thünen Institute and the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in collaboration with partners in Ecuador, the Philippines and Zambia.

Although deforestation rates remain alarmingly high in the tropics, there are also examples of reforestation, both via natural regeneration and through plantation development. While the effects on climate change are mostly undisputed, the processes of deforestation and reforestation often have unknown consequences for the livelihoods of the local population. In many countries, the development of reference scenarios for deforestation at the national level for the implementation of the REDD+ mechanism is well advanced, but little is known about the effectiveness of global and national policy instruments.
