Under the title “Towards the bioeconomy: The role of traditional and emerging products and supporting actions”, this Editorial introduces a Special Issue published in Forest Policy and Economics.


The sustainable management of renewable resources is important for the transition from a fossil-based towards a bio-based economy in Germany.


Planted forests contribute to maximizing timber production but their role as valuable habitat for biodiversity is of increasing concern, particularly in tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF) landscapes, which present extremely high diversity and endemism.

Payments for environmental services are supposed to prevent deforestation. But do they actually lead to measurable additional protection, or do they only shift the problem? We investigated this question using Ecuador as an example.
