Background
The PhD-Summer School is part of the Bilateral Academic Exchange Programme, a funding instrument of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). In 2019, the Summer School is hosted and organized by the Johann Heinrich von Thuenen Institute, the German Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries
Aims of the Summer School
The main objective of the PhD Summer School is to provide future scientists from countries of the global South with different methods of research-based policy advice. The participants of the Summer School will observe and get to know the policy advisory activities of a German federal research institute.
During the PhD-Summer School, African and Asian PhD- students and postdocs will learn some procedures that are implemented at Thuenen Institute. These procedures support the policy making process in Germany in a theoretical and empirical framework. One of the tools introduced during the Summer School is for example AGMEMOD, the Agriculture Member State Modelling. This model has been developed with the aim to provide projections and policy impact assessments for EU Member States and other countries.
Structure
The Summer School starts on Monday 12 August and ends on Friday 16 August. After some theoretical inputs on policy advice, the participants will be divided into working groups to develop a Summer School project, which will be presented on the last day of the Summer School. Experienced scientists will accompany and support the continuous work on the project and provide feedback. Besides, the participants will receive theoretical input (writing workshop) and get to know diverse methodologies on extracting main messages from research for policy advice. A trip to other Thuenen institutes will illustrate what research based policy advice look like in practice.
Application
Applicants have to be staff of a research project funded by BMEL in the frame of the “International Cooperation and Global Food Security”. Please send an email to registration@agmemod.eu if you are interested to attend the Summer School. Please note: There is a limited space in the summer school. After the registration process, the organization team will inform you about the results and provide further information.
Participation fee
The Summer School is funded by the BMEL. The Thuenen Institute does not charge tuition for the summer school from participants and your travel expenses will be covered.
Invitation Letters
We will provide document support for those participants requiring visa for Germany to attend the course. Please get in touch with the Summer School coordinator ( aida.gonzalez@thuenen.de ) if you need an invitation letter for the visa process, before you contact us, you should be admitted to the Summer School.
