Researcher with experience in Ecosystem Services and Land Use Analysis (f/m/d)

The Thünen Institute of Forestry of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, in Hamburg-Bergedorf is looking for a motivated
Researcher with experience in Ecosystem Services and Land Use Analysis (f/m/d)
starting 01.11.2023 for a period of 3 years in a part-time employment of 75 % (29,25 h/week).
The position will be embedded in the research unitForestry Worldwide which focus on sustainable forest management in a landscape context, the potential of forest management for sustainable development and its influence on livelihoods of rural populations in the tropics. An important prerequisite for this is the reconciling of land use with climate goals and the conservation of biodiversity.
The position will be part of the research project "CITIZEN-SDSS: Using Citizen Science approaches and Spatial Decision Support Systems to foster nature-based solutions to sustain and expand the remaining forest landscapes of the Philippines". CITIZEN-SDSS brings together scientists from Germany and the Philippines focusing on four landscapes in Cagayan Valley and Eastern Visayas regions (each landscape covers approx. 80-100 km²). The project develops methodological approaches for making projections on long-term forest management pathways to support the wellbeing of local communities while fostering nature-based solutions. It analyses future scenarios of land use management and their impact on ecosystem services (e.g., crop production, wood production, flood protection, and others) using participatory approaches, geographic information systems (GIS) and spatio-temporal modeling (CLUMondo, InVEST) in a co-design and bottom-up setting.
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Organising data management (spatial, non-spatial) together with research team
- Using geostatistical assessments to identify land degradation hot-/cold-spots
- Conducting co-design scenario and feedback workshops with local and regional stakeholders
- Simulating and analysing land use change scenarios with CLUMondo and InVEST models
- Preparing scientific publications, project reports and training materials for local stakeholders
- Presentation of methodology and results at national meetings and international conferences
Requirements
- degree (good or very good) in agriculture, forestry or geoinformation sciences, environmental management, or related fields
- Profound knowledge in tropical land use systems, forest management and stakeholder interactions
- Proficiency in GIS and geospatial data processing using R or Python
- Experience in conducting focus group workshops and co-design scenario settings is an asset
- Willingness to learn spatio-temporal model applications such as CLUMondo and InVEST
- Able to work both independently and collaborate in a team
- Good intercultural communication skills and social competence are an advantage
- Proficiency in English is mandatory (e.g., C1 CEFR), other languages (Filipino, German) of advantage
