Von 09/2019 bis 02/2023 arbeitete Sonja Holler im Projekt LaForeT am Thünen-Institut für Waldwirtschaft. Ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit im Projekt bildete auch die Grundlage für ihre Dissertation an der Universität Hamburg, Institut für Physische Geographie, mit dem Titel "Towards modeling of multifunctional landscapes for policy development and applied landscape planning in the Anthropocene – Development of the LPB-RAP model for long-term simulation and analysis of Restoration Areas Potentials and Potential Habitat Corridors in smallholder-dominated forest landscapes".
