Biodiversität und Wanderfische
Der Erhalt der biologischen Vielfalt ist ebenso wie der Schutz und die nachhaltige Nutzung aquatischer genetischer Ressourcen erklärtes Ziel der Bundesregierung. Dabei geht es aber nicht nur um Nord- und Ostsee. Durch den verstärkten Handel mit Fisch und anderen Meeresprodukten kommen immer wieder Arten auch auf den deutschen Markt, über deren Biologie und Verbreitung nur wenig bekannt ist oder deren Bestände gar als gefährdet gelten.
Weltweit gibt es etwa 33.000 Fischarten, von denen etwa 7000 einer menschlichen Nutzung unterliegen – Tendenz steigend. Deren Unterscheidung basiert oft nur auf einigen wenigen Merkmalen und bedarf häufig Expertenwissens. Doch sowohl in Hinsicht auf Produktqualität und damit Verbraucherschutz als auch im Sinne der Rückverfolgbarkeit von Fisch und Fischereiprodukten aus dem Blickwinkel des Bestandsschutzes ist es notwendig, Fische möglichst eindeutig zu erkennen und auch deren geographische Herkunft überprüfen zu können. Auch bei prozessierten Fischprodukten, wie etwa Filets und Dosenware, muss eine Kontrollmöglichkeit in Hinblick auf eine korrekte Etikettierung gewahrt werden. Am Institut für Fischereiökologie arbeiten wir dank unserer Expertise in der Fischerkennung, Laboranalytik und Fischgenetik vor allem an der Entwicklung von genetischen Markern zur Arterkennung ebenso wie zur Bestandsdifferenzierung wichtiger Modellarten, wie Sprotten und Heringen, aber auch Eis- und Thunfischen. Einen wichtigen und biologisch besonders interessanten Teil des aquatischen Arteninventars stellen Wanderfische dar. Um ihre Laichplätze aufzusuchen oder ihre Futtergründe zu erreichen, legen viele Fischarten lange und strapaziöse Wanderungen zurück und überwinden dabei zum Teil gewaltige Distanzen und große Hindernisse. Solche Fischarten, die zwischen Salz- und Süßwasser wechseln, sogenannte diadrome Arten, sind dabei oftmals besonders anfällig für menschliche Einflüsse, wie der Verbauung und Zergliederung von Flüssen, Überfischung oder auch klimatischen Veränderungen. Daraus ergeben sich besondere Herausforderungen für das Bestandsmanagement, häufig verbunden mit einer internationalen Koordination von Schutzmaßnahmen und nachhaltigen Nutzungsstrategien. Am Thünen-Institut für Fischereiökologie beschäftigen wir uns mit unterschiedlichsten Fragestellungen zu Biologie, Ökologie, Verhalten, Schutz und Nutzung von ökologisch und ökonomisch bedeutenden Wanderfischarten. Ein Schwerpunkt unserer Forschung liegt dabei auf der Untersuchung der verschiedenen Lebensstadien des Europäischen Aals (Anguilla anguilla), dessen Bestand bereits seit Jahren als außerhalb biologisch sicherer Grenzen und damit als gefährdet eingestuft wird. Sowohl mit Feld- als auch mit Laborexperimenten arbeiten wir daran, den Lebenszyklus und die bestandsbeeinflussenden Faktoren und Mechanismen besser zu verstehen und damit die Grundlagen für ein nachhaltiges Bestandsmanagement dieser Art zu entwickeln.

Nachhaltige Bewirtschaftung des Europäischen Aals
Die Bestandssituation des Europäischen Aals wird seit geraumer Zeit mit großer Sorge betrachtet. Mit unseren Untersuchungen wollen wir zur Ableitung effektiverer Maßnahmen für eine nachhaltige Bewirtschaftung dieser faszinierenden Fischart beitragen.
Reproduktionsbiologie des Europäischen Aals
Die größten Wissenslücken beim Aal bestehen bei den ozeanischen Stadien und der Reproduktionsbiologie. Deshalb führen wir regelmäßig Untersuchungen im Laichgebiet des Aals durch. Unsere Erkenntnisse sollen helfen, Schwankungen im Aufkommen von Glasaalen besser zu erklären. Darüber hinaus versuchen wir, Aale unter kontrollierten Bedingungen zu vermehren.
Herkunftskontrolle von Fischereiprodukten
Um besser zu verhindern, dass illegal gefangene Fische auf den Markt gelangen, sind genetische Herkunftsnachweise erforderlich. Wir nutzen moderne genetische Methoden, um die Rückverfolgbarkeit von Fischereiprodukten zu verbessern und so illegale Fischereiaktivitäten aufzuzeigen und die Sicherehit der Verbraucher zu erhöhen.
Genetische Bestandstrennung
Mit molekulargenetischen Methoden untersuchen wir den Einfluss ökologischer Faktoren auf die Bestandsstruktur und die Konnektivität von Populationen verschiedener mariner Fischarten. Die Erkenntnisse sollen uns helfen, Artbildungsprozesse besser zu verstehen und das fischereiliche Management zu verbessern.
Dossier
Wanderfische stellen einen wichtigen und besonders interessanten Teil des aquatischen Arteninventars dar. In verschiedenen Lebensphasen legen viele Arten lange und strapaziöse Wanderungen zurück und überwinden dabei zum Teil große Distanzen. Doch ihre Lebensweise macht sie anfällig für menschliche Einflüsse. Verbaute und zergliederte Flüsse, Überfischung oder auch klimatische Veränderungen setzen sie unter Druck. Daraus ergeben sich besondere Herausforderungen für das Bestandsmanagement, häufig verbunden mit einer internationalen Koordination von Schutzmaßnahmen und nachhaltigen Nutzungsstrategien. In unserem Arbeitsbereich beschäftigen wir uns dehalb mit unterschiedlichsten Fragestellungen zu Biologie, Ökologie, Verhalten, Schutz und Nutzung von ökologisch und ökonomisch bedeutenden Wanderfischarten.
